Twitch names are 4 to 25 characters: letters, numbers and underscores, and can't start with an underscore. "No account found" means nobody is using it now. Twitch can still hold back names from closed or banned accounts, so sign-up has the final say.

How to choose a streamer name

Say it out loud. If a friend can't type it after hearing it once, viewers can't either. Short names are easier to remember, to fit on a webcam frame and to say in a shout-out.

Avoid long strings of numbers and look-alike letters such as I and l. Check the same name on Kick, YouTube, TikTok, X and Discord before you commit, so your brand is the same everywhere.

How the taken check works

Check on Twitch looks up every name on the list in Twitch's public user records. "Taken" means an account has it now. "No account found" means nobody is using it.

Twitch can still hold back names from closed or banned accounts, so the sign-up page has the final word. You can change your Twitch name later in Settings, with a wait between changes.

How to use it

  1. Pick a style and, if you like, type your name or a word you like.
  2. Turn numbers or underscores on or off, and press More ideas for new names.
  3. Press Check on Twitch, then copy a name that isn't taken.

Common questions

What are Twitch's username rules?

4 to 25 characters, using only letters, numbers and underscores. A name can't start with an underscore.

How do I know if a Twitch name is taken?

Press Check on Twitch. It looks every name up in Twitch's public records and marks it Taken or No account found.

Can I get a name from a closed account?

Sometimes, after a while. Twitch keeps names from closed or banned accounts unavailable for a time and doesn't release every one.

Can I change my Twitch name later?

Yes, in Settings, but Twitch makes you wait between changes and your old name stays reserved for a while.

Should my Twitch name match my other socials?

Ideally, yes. One name everywhere makes you easier to find, so check it on the other platforms before you decide.
