YouTube thumbnail size
YouTube asks for 1280 × 720 px, a 16:9 shape, at least 640 px wide and under 2 MB. The resizer frames your picture to 16:9 and compresses it until it fits, so the upload never bounces.
The dashed box marks the bottom right corner, where YouTube puts the video length over your thumbnail.
Check it small
Most people see your thumbnail at the size of a stamp: in search results, in the sidebar and on phones. The small previews show it at those sizes so you can check the text is still readable before you upload.

What is the YouTube thumbnail size?

What is the maximum thumbnail file size?

Can I use a thumbnail for a YouTube live stream?
- Yes. Upcoming and live streams take a custom thumbnail the same size as videos.
Why can't I upload custom thumbnails?
- Your channel needs to be verified (phone verification) before YouTube lets you add custom thumbnails.
Is my picture uploaded?
